A WITNESS appeal has been launched following an arson attack which destroyed an historic cricket pavilion.

The incident happened at Kidderminster Cricket Club, in Chester Road North, just before 2am, on Sunday April 6.

It is believed a bin was set on fire which spread to the pavilion, completely destroying it. It is estimated the damage was between £50,000 and £60,000.

PC Dan Rutherford of Kidderminster Police said: "It was only by prompt action by the fire service that prevented the fire spreading to the adjacent club building.

"Particularly distressing for the club is the fact that the destroyed building was used to house equipment for their junior team. This equipment and kit has been totally destroyed only two weeks before the start of the new cricket season."

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact PC Rutherford at Kidderminster Police Station on 08457 444888, quoting incident reference number 93-s-060408, or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
