BEWDLEY railway station goes festival this Saturday as the small complement of volunteers who man the Severn Valley Railway station put on their big event of the summer, Bewdley Station Commercial Vehicle Day.

Vans, lorries and buses – ranging from a modest Reliant Supervan (now gloriously infamous thanks to the Trotter Brothers in Only Fools and Horses) to a big, brash London Transport Routemaster double-decker, will take over a large part of Bewdley station yard for the day. Twenty or more vehicles are expected.

Visitors will be able to take advantage of behind-the-scenes tours for an insight into the workings of the 1862-built station, which is still the Severn Valley Railway’s headquarters and which boasts its own small locomotive depot, carriage restoration shed and two signalboxes.

An impressive model railway layout of Bewdley, a real ale tent, cream teas and a colouring competition for children, in which everyone wins a prize, are among the other main focal points.

Admission to Bewdley Station Commercial Vehicle Day is free but because parking spaces are limited by the display vehicles, visitors are being encouraged to take the train from either Kidderminster or Bridgnorth stations.

Commercial Vehicle Day runs from 10am to 5pm and trains will be running at 75-minute intervals, starting at 10am from Kidderminster (journey time 22 minutes) and 10.35am from Bridgnorth (journey time 57 minutes).
