A FOOT care service for the elderly is looking for volunteers.

Jenny Knowles, of Age Concern Wyre Forest, set the service up three years ago after the NHS brought in restrictions for podiatrists.

Mrs Knowles explained: “Due to funding issues, NHS podiatrists can now only deal with elderly people with medical problems.

“We were, therefore, asked by the NHS to provide a toenail cutting service for a wider range of elderly people.

“We are self-funded so we get no funding help at all. We desperately need volunteers to help us.”

Volunteers will receive a half-day’s training from the NHS podiatry service, for which they will gain a certificate.

Mrs Knowles said she thought toe care was important and needed to be recognised by more people.

She added: “If you haven’t had your toenails cut for a long time, they can start to hurt and affect your whole mobility.

”Older people find it very difficult to cut their toenails and this service is a great help.”

Toe care sessions are carried out on Wednesday afternoons from 1.30pm at the Tulip Tree Day Centre, in Castle Road, Kidderminster.

Each client has to buy a set of clippers and files, which they then bring each time they make an appointment.
