SIX young men from the Kidderminster and Kingswinford Air Training Corps completed a strenuous 50 mile hike as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold award scheme.

The expedition took place from August 23 to 28 in Snowdonia National Park where the group’s navigation skills and training provided them with the skills and stamina to see them through the challenge.

Also involved in the expedition, was wild camping, dependence on mountain water to drink and only dried food to eat at meal times.

The rainy climate tested their endurance while visibility was often less than five metres and challenged the group’s ability to stay focused and on track.

They still finished in good time and will receive their award from HRH Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh or another member of the royal family at one of the royal palaces.

The gold award requires completion of a personal programme of activities including learning new or improving existing skills, physical recreation, voluntary service, a week of work away from home and a four day expedition.

A Wyre Forest District Council Xpression grant was used for the purchase of the equipment needed for the expedition.
