CLEOBURY Mortimer fire station’s community safety day was supported by MP, Philip Dunne.

The Ludlow MP said: "I was very impressed by the support given to the Cleobury firefighters by their colleagues from across the fire and rescue service in Shropshire.

“These officers do a magnificent job and it is important that the community recognise that they are all retained, not full-time, officers who are doing this essential work for the protection and benefit of us all."

Fire and rescue tenders of all kinds were on hand to demonstrate the varied roles of the service, as well as many other community safety services, such as first responders, paramedics, road safety, local community safety officers and the police.

The Pension Service and Diabetes UK were also on hand to answer queries from members of the public.

Mr Dunne added: "This was a first-rate opportunity for local residents to see at first-hand the valuable role which our community safety teams play within our community.

“I hope some people were sufficiently inspired to consider joining the retained fire service or first responders, as they both do such a great job in keeping Cleobury safe."

Shropshire county councillor, John Hurst-Knight, was on hand as a member of the fire authority.

He said: "I am a great supporter of the work of the fire and rescue service across the county.

“We have one of the largest retained forces in the country and it is an important for us to recruit and retain strength at our stations, so events like this help to raise awareness among the communities we serve of the vital role the service provides."
