Career spans more than 30 years

AN AWARD-winning singer-songwriter is performing at Cookley Sebright Primary School on Thursday night.

Martin Simpson has appeared on Later with Jools Holland and the BBC Proms in a career spanning more than 30 years.

He scooped the Best Album prize at the 2008 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for Prodigal Son, a mixture of traditional songs and originals featuring guests Jackson Browne and Kate Rusby.

Since 2001, Martin has focused on making folk music after experimenting with bluegrass, cajun and Indian sounds.

A readers' poll of Acoustic Guitar magazine voted him the 12th best guitarist in the world in 2005.

The gig will feature material taken from the 17 albums he has released during his career, dating back to his debut, Golden Vanity, in 1976.

Martin de Vine, headteacher at Cookley Sebright, said: “Martin was recently seen on BBC Four playing at the Albert Hall, so it is quite a coup getting him here in Cookley.”
