COOKLEY’S history will be celebrated at a colourful event on Saturday.

The evening will start at 7pm with a barbeque, outdoor bar music and a cake and tea stall run by the Women’s Institute.

Celebrating Cookley will also include a parade of flags, banners, masks and mythical figures weaving across the village playing fields from 8.45pm.

An outdoor performance will take place at 9.30pm on the canalside terrace at the fields, where “the spirit of the River Severn” will exchange stories with a young girl, combining myths and legends with tales of Cookley and its people.

Visitors can take their own rugs, seats, picnic and umbrellas.

Last month, youngsters from Cookley Sebright Primary School took part in a series of workshops, making puppets, costumes, masks and lanterns for the event.

Elizabeth McDonnell, one of the organisers from Cookley Local Agenda 21, said: “Bohemian Events, who held the workshops, have spent last week creating and testing the fire puppet, the water pumps, the costumes, the use of the space and more.

“Additional work is also going on with the pupils at Cookley Sebright. The children will be taking part in the performance as elves and the like.

“A great deal of input and support has been provided by various organisations and people of Cookley in getting all in place for the evening.”
