FAIRTRADE campaigners in Kidderminster are celebrating the renewal of the town’s special status.

The UK's Fairtrade Foundation gave the thumbs up to the re-application after confirming that the required number of retail and catering outlets supplied Fairtrade products for the size of the population and that the message was continuing to be spread.

The status was first given to Kidderminster in autumn, 2007 after a three-year campaign by a dedicated committee of enthusiasts, led by group chairman, Peter Grantham and the renewal will last for two years He said: “I am delighted that the renewal has been secured. Our group has worked hard to ensure the momentum was not lost after we first gained Fairtrade status.

“We have held a successful Fairtrade Fortnight, including tasting sessions at the library and a competition for children. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, we have been given two promotional banners to advertise the cause and had a successful stall at Kidderminster Carnival.

“Our education group has done marvellous work in schools throughout Kidderminster and I would like to thank all those who have worked hard to promote Fairtrade in the town and all those who supply, serve and buy Fairtrade products, which help farmers and suppliers in the developing world earn a fair income to support their families and communities.”
