PLANS for a major £2.5 million upgrade of Kidderminster train station have got the backing of the Government.

The proposed scheme is part of a series of improvements throughout the West Midlands.

It intends, among other things, to replace existing station buildings, include a bus terminal, incorporate a link with the Severn Valley Railway station and improve cycle paths.

As part of the project, a new passenger terminal in Kidderminster is expected to be opened in early 2011.

The plans have been developed by partnership working between Worcestershire County Council, Network Rail, London Midland, Centro and Wyre Forest District Council.

A county council spokesman said: “£2.5 million funding to provide a high quality multi-modal interchange at Kidderminster Railway Station has now been secured from the Department for Transport, subject to the business case being accepted.

“Designs for the upgrade are being drawn up and if they are approved by the county council’s cabinet they could go out to public consultation towards the end of the year.”
