THE Hoola Boola Boys return to Stourport on Sunday, September 27, joined by popular rhythm and blues singer Ricky Cool.
The gig at the Boat Club is part of Wyre Fest, a week-long music festival headlined by The Blockheads.
The American frontman, who performed with Robert Plant’s Honeydrippers, will play with the Hoola Boola Boys, an energetic band that have been touring since their unplanned formation for a 40th birthday party in 1990.
Plant joined the band onstage for two songs at the Robin 2 club in Bilston last year, where Ricky’s old bands The Rialtos and the Big Town Playboys were also reunited.
Martyn Price, Hoola Boola Boys bassist and manager, was a leather tailor in Bewdley in the early 1970s and first met Robert at his workshop in Park Lane.
“One day, I heard the door go and heard someone with a voice like Elvis coming up the stairs,” he explained.
“In bursts Robert, looking all denim and golden as he did back then. He’s always been a friend since and we’ve been through a lot together.”
Martyn, whose brother worked as a roadie for Fleetwood Mac in the band’s early days, is hoping to secure a support slot at Mott the Hoople’s comeback gigs using his contacts in the business.
He said a “love of music” kept the band going, adding: “It’s just knowing that people enjoy what you do - that’s why you do it.”
The gig starts at 3pm, with profits going to The Proton Effect, which helps cancer sufferers in Wyre Forest, and Spinal Research, which funds research into a cure for spinal disability.
