A 34-year-old Blakedown man who savagely stabbed his former girlfriend with a kitchen knife before trying to throttle the friend who had given her refuge has been warned he faces a "substantial" time behind bars.

Judge Robin Onions told Simon Davies it was clear he presented a serious risk of causing future harm and added: "I am bound to say I have the safety of the public in mind."

He ruled he had to consider the imposition of an extended sentence as he further remanded Davies in custody for the preparation of a psychiatric report.

The Judge said he had been caught in possession of a knife on two occasions and he had now used a knife and he ruled he needed the report to assess the risk posed by Davies - particularly to anyone with whom he had been in a relationship.

Davies, of Sculthorpe Road, admitted wounding Tonia Watson, assaulting Michael Darby causing him actual bodily harm and also possessing a small quantity of heroin.

Miss Watson and Mr Darby had to use a number of ornaments, including a candlestick, to beat off Davies as they were "fighting for their lives", said Mr Hugh O'Brien-Quinn prosecuting.

He said said Davies - a man with a string of previous convictions - had been in a relationship with Miss Watson but it broke down because of his continual use of alcohol and drugs.

The couple, though, remained friends and Davies would go to her home in the Stourbridge area and be allowed to stay over, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

But the last time he went to the house he began talking about death and dying and Miss Watson - "in genuine fear for her safety" - went to the home of Mr Darby.

Davies then made a number of threatening telephone calls to them both before punching and kicking Mr Darby after barging his way into the house.

He then took hold of the kitchen knife, which had a six-inch blade, and, after telling Miss Watson she was going to die, he punched and kicked her in the face before stabbing her in the leg.

There was then a struggle with Mr Darby, who thought he was going to die as Davies had his hands around his throat, before both he and Miss Watson used a variety of weapons to subdue him and get him out of the house.

In the attack, Miss Watson suffered a fractured eye socket, the stab wound to her leg and a cut to a hand, while Mr Darby sustained bruising to his face and neck.

The Judge told Davies he was a "real risk" as he remanded him in custody until November 16 for the psychiatric report, having committed the offences just days after his last release from a prison term.
