A DARTS tournament was held in memory of one the sport’s Wyre Forest legends, who died of cancer last year after being treated at the Millbrook Suite.

The first Malcolm White Knockout Cup, contested by 20 teams at The Sportsman pub in Kidderminster, raised £350 for the appeal.

The event was organised by landlord Keith Manning, who used to run the town’s darts leagues with Mr White.

The tournament, which took place through the summer, was won by Malcolm’s son, Andrew, and his team from Habberley club.

“Malcolm would have been proud of them all - he would have approved,” Mr Manning said. “The family wanted the money to go the Millbrook because Malcolm was treated so well there.”

Mr White died at home in August last year, having visited the Millbrook Suite regularly during his illness to have blood transfusions.

A talented darts player, he played against stars of the oche, Eric Bristow, Bobby George, John Lowe and Tony Brown, during his successful career.

Mr White was a stalwart of the Kidderminster darts scene, helping to set up the Sunday League in 1970 and running the Monday Night League since 1968.

There are now plans to stage the tournament every year in Mr White’s memory following the success of this summer’s event.
