A POPULAR former Bewdley landlord has died of cancer, aged 58.
Martyn Jones and his wife, Irene, ran the pub at the George Hotel in Load Street for 14 years until 2006.
Mrs Jones said she had received “so many” phone calls and cards from people in Bewdley since her husband died on Sunday, December 13.
She explained: “He was full of fun and jokes – the kind of guy you would invite to a party.
“He was famed for wearing his bow ties and was very charismatic, always willing to talk to anybody.”
The couple, who were married for 34 years, ran pubs in Ludlow and Leominster before moving to Bewdley.
Their time running The George was “very happy”, Mrs Jones said, adding: “We worked hard and we turned it round because when we got there it was quite tired.
“We had a good body of regular customers and the pub’s coffee shop brought in a lot of little old ladies, who all loved Martyn.”
When they gave up The George three years ago, they bought a motorhome and toured Europe, visiting countries like Spain, Portugal and France.
They have one son, Sam, 21, who lives with his mother in Sandbourne Drive, Bewdley.
Mrs Jones said her husband would be missed in Wyre Forest.
