A PAIR of Kidderminster identical twins are among the last British Army recruits of the year.
Rebecca and Victoria Jones, 16, of Rozel Avenue, have joined the Royal Signals as communication systems engineers.
They have pledged their allegiance to Queen and Country and are due to attend the Army Foundation College in Harrogate on January 3.
The twins finished their education at King Charles I School where they each passed all nine of their GCSEs.
They are keen sports people playing netball in the Kidderminster and District League. They also formerly played football for Aston Villa Girls Centre of Excellence and Ferndale Young Girls and Ladies Football Club as well as cricket for Stourport Ladies.
They explained that the appeal of the army was the sporting opportunities coupled with the chance to travel around the world.
Victoria said: “It is an exciting career. There will be lots of challenges and exciting things you can do. The Royal Signals is also very good for sport.
“We are both sporty and like to keep fit and we are also good at mixing with people. We are team players and work well with other people and we think these are good qualities for the army.”
Rebecca added: “It is about the experience. The army is a job that makes you mature quicker and teaches you to tolerate others and respect different cultures.”
The sisters explained that they originally wanted to be police officers but decided on the army as their future career a few years ago.
Neither girl was worried about being sent to war-torn Afghanistan and serving on the front line.
Victoria said: “We have signed up to join the army and we will get on with it. We are not worried about going to war.”
Rebecca added: “It is bound to scare us but we signed up for it and we are prepared to go out there and try and help others.”
Gill Jones, their mother, said: “I am very proud of them. They want to do it and it is an achievement at 16 to do everything they have done.
“I think the opportunities are there for them in the army. There are real opportunities and the chance to see the world.”
