BEWDLEY has been warned it faces disruption during four months of roadworks to replace gas and water mains.
During the scheme, Load Street will be closed for a week in February, while High Street will be shut for nearly four weeks in April.
Severn Trent Water and National Grid will carry out the work from Monday, January 11, until May 7.
Severn Trent will be replacing a water main pipe that is over 100 years old with a new plastic mains pipe.
Project managers explained the current old water main has started to leak, bursting six times between September and November.
National Grid will replace the old metal gas mains running along Load Street - which have now reached the end of their working life - with hard wearing plastic pipe.
Temporary traffic lights will be in place in Load Street until February 12, as part of the first of five phases of work being done.
Load Street will then shut between Saturday, February 13 until Sunday, February 21. The road closure has been timed to coincide with the school half-term holidays in order to “minimise traffic disruption”.
The third phase of the work will continue through from Load Street to High Street, from February 22 to March 14. During this time, temporary traffic lights will be used to control traffic flow in the area.
Phase four will run from March 15 to April 11, when temporary traffic lights will control traffic going from High Street to Load Street.
The final phase of the works will start on April 12 until May 7 in High Street, when Severn Trent Water will replace the water mains. High Street will be closed to through traffic and a traffic diversion will be set up.
“Unfortunately, roadworks are disruptive but by working closely with Severn Trent we can keep that disruption to a minimum,” said Paul Jones, project manager for National Grid. “The short term inconvenience of this work will have long term benefits for the town.”
Derek Prodger Worcestershire County Council’s cabinet member for transport and safe environment, said: “We appreciate that these co-ordinated utilities renewals will cause some inconvenience and disruption for residents, traders and road users but we ask for patience while our partners carry out the works in a timely and professional manner.”
