A KIDDERMINSTER boat repairer has been awarded more than £8,000 for unfair dismissal - six months after his son was made redundant with 200 others from the same firm.
Ron Everitt, 64 of Tynings Close, Kidderminster won his claim for unfair dismissal at Birmingham Employment Tribunal against Sealine International Ltd, of Kidderminster.
But a reprepresentative of the firm said Mr Everitt was selected for redundancy when he was one of the bottom two in the scoring criteria.
The criteria was based on commitment, pride and passion for the job, it was said.
Mr Everitt, who was the workers’ forum representative, alleged the scoring system had been unfair where his work was concerned.
He said he hoped to work until he was 70 and had been unable to find another job because of his age.
Tribunal chairman, Lorna Findlay, accused the firm of providing only “loose examples” of evidence in defining its committment criteria.
“The tribunal decision is that Mr Everitt was unfairly dismissed and we award him a total of £8,240,” she said.
Mrs Findlay said, however, that the total had been reduced by 10 per cent because Mr Everitt would probably have lost his job when he reached 65.
Mr Everitt said he was happy with the outcome, which was a matter of principle, rather than money.
