GENEROUS Wyre Forest folk have been putting their hands in their pockets to raise cash for the Haiti Appeal.
Some of the district’s schools and community groups have been doing their bit for the earthquake-hit Caribbean country by organising fund-raising events.
Staff at a Cookley care home helped raise about £390 when they donned their night clothes for a pyjama day.
Westley Court Care Home residents also tucked into a full English breakfast for lunch as part of the event and took part in activities and games.
Diane Day, activities co-ordinator, said: “We were originally going to hold the event to raise money for the home’s residents’ fund. But we’ve decided to send the proceeds to Haiti after being moved by recent events there.”
Members of Stourport Rotary Club raised more than £700 for Haiti’s residents when they held a collection in the town.
About £760 was collected and with an extra £220 promised, the club hopes to have enough money to send two shelterboxes to the country.
Don Giles, club secretary, said: “I would like to thank everyone who donated so generously.
“I have witnessed numerous collections and I have never seen so much folding money being pushed into the collection buckets.”
Pupils and staff at Kidderminster’s King Charles I School raised £1,200 when they wore their own clothes for a day in return for a contribution to the appeal.
Meanwhile, more than £200 was raised at a bring and buy sale at St Catherine’s CofE Primary School.
The year six pupils came up with the idea and organised the event, which collected £270. “The children absolutely loved it,” said Catherine Unit, deputy headteacher, “We got rid of virtually everything. It was brilliant.”
Pupils at St Bartholomew’s CofE Primary School also chipped in to boost the appeal.
The year six youngsters organised a fund-raising day with a tombola and other fund-raising activities. Some £250 was raised.
Rebecca Penwarden, year two teacher, said: “We had a really good response. Lots of people from the local community came.”
