SEVERN Trent's supply across Wyre Forest is returning to normal this afternoon after a burst main left hundreds of homes, schools and businesses with no water.

About 1,000 calls were made to the company this morning complaining the water supply had been cut off after a main burst in Astley.

A Severn Trent spokesman said the supply was back on in most areas now after repair work was carried out.

Astley Primary, Stourport, Birchen Coppice Primary School, Kidderminster and St Bartholomews CE Primary School, Stourport are all closed today because they had no water.

Kemp Hospice in Kidderminster has also shut for the day, so cancer patients could not attend for their daytime hospice sessions.

The Severn Trent spokesman warned an airlock could mean some people only get intermittent pressure through their taps at first.

He added burst mains were common in winter as freezing conditions cause the ground around pipes to expand and contract.
