TRIBUTES have been paid to a much-loved father-of-three who formed a popular family busking band and was found hanged in Stourport.

Michael Billington, 49, of Bishop Street, Stourport, was found dead on February 24 at Burlish Top Nature Reserve. His funeral was held at Stourport Cemetery on March 8.

He founded the Billington Family Buskers about five years ago, consisting of his wife, Heidi, on keyboard, himself on bass guitar and their children, Hannah, Thomas and Becky.

The five-piece began busking when drummer, Hannah, was 11, guitarist, Thomas, 14 and rhythm guitarist, Becky, 15. Mr Billington was a Christadelphian and the band performed religious music, as well as pieces by the Beatles and the Shadows, before disbanding about two years ago. They played at functions and private parties, as well as in town centres all over Worcestershire and were featured in The Shuttle in 2005.

The band helped raise money for causes such as Children in Need, although most of the earnings were split between the three children.

A statement by the family said: “We are so proud to have had Michael in our family. He was always ready to help anyone and he left everyone with a smile, as he had a lovely, infectious sense of humour.

“He was a very gifted man, who could turn his hand to anything he chose to and Michael did it well. He was especially gifted in the renovation of classic cars and renovating his family’s homes.

“He was a talented musician and was the founder of the Billington Family Buskers, who were successful wherever they performed.

“Michael set it up because he loved music and it was fun. He taught his children how to play and they did it as a family.

“Thank you to all his friends who have spoken so well of Michael and respected Michael in his life, as well as in his death.

“There are no words to say how sorely you will be missed. You will always be loved by us. We knew your pain, we felt your pain. Rest in peace.”

An inquest has been opened and adjourned by the Worcestershire Coroner, awaiting reports.
