A POPULAR music club has set up a new home on a caravan park near Stourport.

Matt Worley and Gary Davis ran regular live band nights at Stourport Boat Club until last year but recently moved to Lincomb.

They have now set up the Riverside Club at the Cockerel Inn at Winnall Caravan Park and are hoping to attract some new followers.

Matt said: “The aim is to resurrect the success of the old club so we look forward to welcoming performers and audiences old and new.”

Scottish five-piece the Tannahill Weavers kick off proceedings on Thursday, having impressed Wyre Forest punters on recent visits.

The band play a mixture of traditional ballads and Celtic instrumentals.

They will be supported by Makale, a rising new local guitar and fiddle duo consisting of Dave Stone and Kathy Forty. Makale perform well-known songs with a Celtic feel from Irish Jigs to their unique arrangements of modern popular music.

An monthly open mic night will be held from May 6, following the success of similar events at Stourport Boat Club.

At its height the old club was attracting 20 acts to each evening, with audiences of up to 100 people gathering to hear talented amateur performers.

Established folk singers also graced the stage in that period including Martin Carthy, Steve Tilson, John Renbourn, Bob Fox and Vin Garbutt.

Two weeks ago a one-off open mic evening was organised to test the water and “exceeded expectations”, according to Matt, attracting about 80 people.

Matt said: “Artists and audience old and new are always welcome. A great night of folk and acoustic music is guaranteed.”

Tickets for the Tannahill Weavers are available from Worley's Strings and Things, 15 Lombard Street, Stourport or by calling 01299 879151 during shop hours.
