FRESH details of MPs’ expenses claims have been revealed, including those of Wyre Forest MP Mark Garnier.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) yesterday published the latest figures on its website which cover claims processed in September and October last year.

Conservative, Mr Garnier received a total of £6,276, comprising of £6,020 for accommodation and £256 for travel.

Two claims totalling £220 for accommodation were rejected as “not claimable under scheme”.

His claims also included an 80p claim for a two mile journey for an engagement within his constituency.

Mr Garnier said: “Travel is mileage allowance travelling to and from London and driving around the patch.

“The £6,020 is the accommodation which is the rent on the flat and associated costs. That will be a regular thing.

“The £220 rejected was two lots of £110. This was, in fact, paid as they were IPSA’s mistake. MPs with dependents under the age of five are allowed an extra bit of accommodation allowance to provide for a slightly larger flat.

“This is so that if needed, we can accommodate the children. My kids are nine, seven and three so I qualify.”

He added: “Unfortunately, it seems that when they put up the rejected claims details on the website, they don’t also put up that in some cases it was their error and that they paid out in the end.”

IPSA has not published the receipts submitted by MPs online as it said this would be too expensive.

Publishing receipts was recommended by the committee which reviewed MPs' expenses following the expenses scandal.

Instead, MPs' claims have been published on IPSA's website under general categories - such as "travel" - with a description of each claim.
