A TEAM of 13 police officers and Special Constables carried out random drug tests in Bwedley.

The operation was as a result of a request from the manager of the George Hotel, as he wanted to be sure he did not have a problem with drug users in the pub.

It ran from 9pm last Friday until midnight and during that time officers tested over 500 customers.

Only four gave a positive reading and they were all low or background traces. These traces can be found on anything that has been touched by many people, particularly things like money or cash machines.

The drug testing is done by using a special machine. Officers take swabs from people’s hands, which are entered into the machine and this shows whether a person has come into contact with drugs. Depending on the reading it can show if they have actually handled drugs and can also identify which type of drugs have been handled.

Officers also carried out the usual high visibility patrols and pub walk throughs at all licensed premises in Bewdley town centre.

PC Steve Yapp said “The overall response from people at the pub was very positive and most people were happy to be tested.

“The police in Bewdley have a very good working relationship with the staff at the George Hotel and they were pleased to see that the operation did not have any adverse affects on the evening’s trade.

“We take a zero tolerance stance towards drugs use and are pleased that the operation was such a success.”
