BEWDLEY Civic Society will be “resurrecting” an ancient event in the town this weekend.

Members will be hosting a cherry fair in front of the town hall to celebrate Civic Day next Saturday. A talk and demonstration will also be held at the Baptist Church on Thursday by Brian Stephens.

He will explain and show how to identify the different cherry varieties.

Richard Perrin, chairman of the group, said: ‘’To coincide with National Civic Day we are resurrecting an ancient event which was once common in Bewdley.

A map of Bewdley 100 years ago shows that the town was completely surrounded by cherry orchards and we have photos of a substantial cherry fair in Load Street by where the War Memorial is today.

“With the dry and sunny spring we have had this year, early varieties should be ripe by then and we will be displaying named varieties.”
