Survey to get crossing installed

CONCERNED residents will be carrying out a survey at a busy Kidderminster road in their bid to get a crossing installed for safety.

They hope to show Worcestershire County Council that a crossing is needed in Heronswood Road at the entrance to Spennells Playing Field, as they claimed drivers often exceed the 30mph speed limit.

Residents will be counting the number of adults and children who face possible danger crossing Heronswood Road to get to the park, during half-term next week.

Concerns about the speeding were also raised at Aggborough and Spennells Partners and Communities Together (PACT) meetings, prompting people to take action.

Trish Preedy, chairman of Aggborough and Spennells Community Action Group, said: “We aim to carry out more counts over weekends and school holidays as we are aware the county council will be looking for an awful lot of evidence of need to take things further and even consider funding a crossing on Heronswood Road.

A vehicle activated sign has been installed in the road by the county council to detect speeding drivers and warn them by flashing the speed limit or a message so they can adjust their speed.

Independent Wyre Forest councillor Helen Dyke, treasurer of the action group, said: ”This issue has been coming to PACT for some meetings now and we decided it was time to stop talking and take action by starting to collecting evidence to show the need for a crossing or some permanent speeding controls on that blind stretch of road.”

People interesting in helping out with the count should contact Ms Preedy on 07947 237336.

This problem has been complained about for at least 25 years, without incident and it's boring that every year some parents get together to complain and the latest councillor gets a photo in the paper - nothing gets done because it is a dangerous location for a crossing to be installed due to the proximity of Kittiwake Drive. Bottomline, the play area is in the wrong place, and should've been at the car park end, the direction the vast majority of play area users live.
A light controlled crossing must be 20metres away from Kittiwake Drive (impractical), with the zebra crossing a minimum of 5metres away - but placing a crossing there will cause dangerous difficulties for road users with the junction. Drivers have always come round the bend in the road from the nursing home far too fast and they would run into the back of any cars stopped at a crossing and it would create an accident blackspot. Short of the council moving the play area or installing a footpath from the carpark to the play area through the park, priority should be given to making visibility better for cars rounding the bend by removing the trees and bushes (on the park side of Heronswood Rd bend), there is little to be done safely except perhaps installing a subway next to the culvert?

Helen Dyke - it is only a blind stretch of road due the trees and bushes planted there, get them removed to improve visibility for everyone.

Emma, I agree to a point that the trees and bushes may cause some obstruction to view but as you travel along Heronswwod Road and past the new nursing home on your left, it is more the new nursing home that obscures the view round the corner.
I would imagine that placing a crossing on the road would be difficult in the sense that a motorist, not familiar with the road, would be round the corner and straight onto it possibly causing more problems than there is at the moment.
Unfortunately some drivers do not drive according to the speed limit and do not use good driving skills and are able to stop in the distance that they can see to be clear.
