    Absolutely I agree entirely, we could probably even go back to Winston Churchill, or at least Mrs Thatcher and her well known love affair with Ronald Reagan.

    But I think things are qualitatively different now.
    Since 9/11 Britain has been the junior partner in the US crusade for global domination and a willing participant in all the hydrocarbon wars that have resulted during the past decade.

    However, the planned introduction of American forms of governance, like elected mayors and police commissioners, represent a new and in my opinion, a more incidious affront to the history and traditions of this country.

    It is what I think is known as cultural imperialism in some quarters, others just call it 'dumbing down'."

Briefings held for potential West Merica Police commissioner

MEETINGS will be held for anyone interested in becoming a police and crime commissioner for West Mercia Police.

On Thursday, November 15, the public will elect a commissioner who will be accountable for how crime is tackled in the area covered by the force - Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin.

Initial briefings for people thinking about standing for election will take place between 10am and noon on Friday, May 4 and Monday, May 21 at force headquarters, Hindlip Hall, Worcester.

They will feature a short video on police operations, talks from the chief constable and Police Authority chief executive and a question and answer session.

Candidates must be British, Commonwealth or EU citizens, 18 years old or over and a resident in the West Mercia Police force area.

People cannot stand for election if they have ever been convicted of an imprisonable offence or are a public servant.
