HEATHFIELD School in Wolverley has invested in life-saving equipment that can restart hearts.

The school has got a defibrillator, like the one used to save Bolton Wanderers footballer Fabrice Muamba when had a cardiac arrest on the pitch.

The electric shock kit came into play when the midfielder’s heart reportedly stopped beating for 78 minutes during an FA Cup match against Tottenham Hotspur on March 17.

Seven staff at Heathfield are trained to use the kit and another 12 will be brought up to speed by September.

Head teacher Roger Brierly said: “Recent events in the news, both locally and nationally, have made us aware, as well as a campaign that’s been running to encourage institutions to get a defibrillator.

“We took the decision we would because we do get a lot of visitors on site such as parents and grandparents. We just felt that it was one of those things that was a very sensible move.

“It’s a life skill so we can’t have too many staff trained in it. I think where it’s possible to have one on site its incredibly useful. It’s a potentially life-saving piece of equipment. I hope I never have to use it.”
