THE family of a teenage girl “traumatised” after she and her friends were attacked by a gang of thugs in a Kidderminster park want better security in the play area.

The 13-year-old, who is too frightened to be named, was playing on the swings in Kidderminster’s Brinton Park with four of her friends when the yobs “went for them” without reason.

The youngster told The Shuttle how she managed to escape from the park and crouched behind parked cars, fearing for her safety as the gang punched and kicked her friends in the play area, at about 2pm on Sunday, September 2.

Her mother Emma Thresh and grandmother Janice Hopkins – both with different surnames to the girl – are now calling for the park to be better patrolled so children can play safely.

Conservative councillor Ian Hardiman, Wyre Forest District Council’s cabinet member for community wellbeing, said the park was patrolled from 9am until 10pm seven days a week, however.

Mrs Thresh said: “It’s horrendous to think that my daughter and her friends can’t go to the park without being beaten up for no reason.

“They did nothing to provoke these kids and they were just attacked. They are quiet kids and this group just went for them.”

She added her daughter was left “traumatised” by the attack and is now suffering with “terrible” nightmares and flashbacks.

“Something’s got to be done to make kids feel safe in the park,”

Mrs Thresh said.

Mrs Hopkins added: “When I was young there were park keepers and I want something like that brought back.”

Mr Hardiman said the council did all it could to keep people safe, adding he was “appalled” by the incident.

He added: “The fact that it is an extremely rare occurrence makes it all the more shocking and we send our kindest thoughts to the children and family involved.”

Wyre Forest local policing chief, Inspector Paul Crowley, said officers were investigating the incident “Our local policing teams are putting on extra patrols in the area and we will be working with the parks patrol service to try and keep the park a safe place to be,” he added.

There have been instances of late night rowdy behaviour in Baxter Park Gardens too. Just by the tennis courts there's a kids playground. As late as midnight there has been groups of hangouts smoking, partying (bringing their music) drinking, screaming and yelling and in one instance trying to light a fire. Also a couple of motor bikes doing wheelies in the kids play area. Next day litter and broken glass in the play area. A request has been asked for increased patrols, awaiting to see what happens. More peaceful when it rains!!

Mr Hardiman needs to get out more if he thinks this is a "rare occurrence", the fact is that most incidents of this type go unreported. I am a fit and able man and I think twice before entering parks, subways, etc.

2pm on a Sunday in a kids playground- were there no other witnesses? No adults with little kids playing there? Even if you wouldn't intervene, you could certainly help the police out.

"I am a fit and able man and I think twice before entering parks, subways, etc.”

I am a not very fit man and I don't think twice about taking my young boy to several of Kidderminsters parks, through subways etc. We need more adults in these spaces not fewer.

If as adults we want community resources like parks and, frankly, streets to be well maintained and for this kind of behaviour to be discouraged, we need to use them, how do we expect a vacuum to encourage good behaviour in a park if nowhere else?

These people are the minority, but the majority is driving past in a car.

walkerno5, My thinking is that if I got into a situation with some young thug and defended myself, I can guess who would be the one facing charges. We do need adults in these places...ones in uniform with the skills to sort these thugs out!

Most carry mobile phones with camera and video, you see this type of technology on the news especially in the middle east. Perhaps people can use these instead of risking getting involved by confrontation.

The public are the police, the police are the public. More use of the spaces by responsible adults is better than conceding it to the authorities. Maybe the 'friends of the parks' should start befriending some of the users of the parks.
