On the road to chaos

Guessing game: Bewdley drivers were left puzzled by the speed on Habberley Road. Guessing game: Bewdley drivers were left puzzled by the speed on Habberley Road.

CONFUSED drivers in Bewdley had a choice of speed limit after a sign was tampered with in Habberley Road.

The two signs, situated between the Mercure Hotel and Bewdley Pines Golf Club, showed two speed limits of 40 and 50 miles per hour.

Worcestershire County Council corrected the signs as soon as they were alerted to the problem by The Shuttle.

Jon Fraser, county council highways customer and community manager said: “Unfortunately, it seemed the speed limit signs had been tampered with and turned around following their recent installation.

Inspectors have been on site to rectify the problem and tighten the bolts to try and ensure this will not happen in the future.

“It’s puzzling to think why anyone would want to do this? Signs like this are erected for a reason and anything that might cause confusion for motorists when it comes to speed limits potentially puts people in danger. If anyone does spot problems like this we'd encourage them to let us know at worcestershire.gov.uk or call 0845 6072005.”

Chaos? Really? You just obey the lower speed limit sign until you reach a repeater in 500 or 700m.

If you want 'chaos' perhaps the Highways Agency can explain why one of the green and white 30mph warning signs on the approach to Stourport on the A451 sports a red and white mandatory colour?

Or hey perhaps why on the same road there are two pairs of "road narrows on the left" signs when the road widens to allow a slip off to the tip?
