Swans taken from canals in Kidderminster

SWANS are believed to have been killed after being taken from canals in Kidderminster.

Three reports of cygnets going missing and it is believed being killed have been made to police in the Clensmore area of the town during the last six weeks.

Residents have been left “distressed” after noticing the birds have disappeared.

PC Julian Ward, wildlife crime officer based at Kidderminster Police Station, said: “It is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to take, kill or injure any wild bird, including swans, and furthermore swans are crown property and are owned by the queen.

“Local residents enjoy feeding the swans and keeping an eye on them and have been distressed to notice the cygnets disappearing.”

PC Ward appealed for anyone with information about people taking swans from the canal to contact him on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

People can also report concerns to the RSPCA or other wildlife groups.
