Hartlebury MP invites online views on same sex marriage

HARTLEBURY’S MP is launching his first online survey of constituents, on same sex marriage.

Conservative Peter Luff said: “I have had passionate emails and letters on both sides of the argument, with a significant majority against introducing same sex marriage.

“So I am aware that this is a subject on which many of my constituents have strong views but I have only heard from a small minority so far.

“I am anxious to gain a closer understanding of the views of a wider range of people and I hope they will respond to this survey, which I will keep open until the end of November.

“The results will not determine how I vote - there is always a risk with online surveys of one side of an argument organising a massive vote in favour of their own view. I also believe that MPs owe their constituents their own judgment too.

“I hope, though, that the findings will help me to understand local views more closely and so shape my own thinking on this sensitive and controversial subject.”

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone is entitled to equal treatment and protection against discrimination, including the right to marry. UK equality legislation enshrines this same principle: equal human rights for all.

Marriage equality is consistent with these human rights values and principles.

Speaking as a happily married straight man, marriage is about love and commitment. If two consenting adults want to make that commitment then good luck to them. This isn't about gay rights, this is about equal rights. How anybody can feel threatened by that is beyond me.

Peter Luff wants to find out how his constituents feel on gay marriage to help him make his mind up...on how far to promote the Tory opposition to it. The biggest draw at the Tory conference was the anti gay marriage rally led by unmarried Anne Widdecombe. Same old bigoted Tories.

I quote: "The results will not determine how I vote"

What's the point then?

Peter Luff should just come out and say whether he supports equality or not!

If he doesn't know his own mind now he never will so I suspect he does not support equality on this issue and is using it as a placard to rally opposition. In that case, it's probably a good job he's off at the next election.

I want MP's to support equality not foster division.

It will let us all know how bigoted the electorate is, but then I think we already know.

It's fine. Get over it.

Not sure whether to laugh or cry that MG is likely to replace Peter. A little closer to his Gloucestershire home I suppose.
