A CANAL boat in Stourport currently being restored to its former glory has been moored at a new site due to repeated vandalism.

The 1934 boat, named Bramble, has moved from the lower basin of Stourport canal to a new mooring behind the Lime Kiln Chandlers’ Shop, in Mart Lane, in the upper basin.

Vandals had removed some planks in the hold and also forced entry into the boat, prompting Stourport Forward, which owns Bramble,to move it,fearing it could be targetted again.

A lack of an electrical power source at the lower basin also meant power tools could not be used in the restoration work.

Jim Amos, volunteer for Stourport Forward, said: “Bramble will remain at her new temporary mooring for a short time until she can be lifted out of the water on to a hard-standing area.

“A specialist crane is required for this but, once on dry land, the serious fitting out of the boat can begin.”

The Shuttle launched an appeal last year to help raise cash for the restoration of the historic boat and thousands of pounds was raised by generous readers.

Most of the material required to carry out the main work has now been acquired, including timber supplied by Thomas Vale to rebuild the cabin and create a classroom in the hold.

The refurbished Bramble will be used to allow schoolchildren to gain an insight into life on the waterways.

Mr Amos said that an old cabin stove which would have been used in a similar boat was still needed. He added it was hoped Bramble would be back in the water by December.
