StopRapeNow.co.uk is a new campaign launched this month by police, health, councils and support agencies across the West Mercia area that aims to challenge the public’s understanding of consent.

Based on reporting to the police, there is an increase in the number of rapes committed during the warmer summer months, particularly among young people and the campaign aims to help address this.

Jocelyn Anderson, CEO of West Mercia Rape & Sexual Abuse Support Centre, said: “Some people still do not understand what true consent is. It does not matter how revealing someone’s clothes may be, how much they have drunk, if you’ve already kissed, or if you’re in a long-term relationship, sex without consent is rape. Rape is NEVER the victim’s fault.”

Det Supt Graeme Pallister, Crime Manager for Warwickshire and West Mercia Police forces, said: “A woman has the right to say no at any point. And if there’s any question about whether she’s drunk too much to give consent, assume she hasn’t given it. If she hasn’t consented and you still have sex with her, it is rape. Being drunk yourself is no defence either. “ A man can be raped too – the offence can only be committed by another man, but women can be charged with being an accessory to rape or assault.

If you have sex with someone without their consent, it is rape. You will be arrested, charged and appear in court where you will face a jury.

You could face a prison sentence, lose your job, get a criminal record and be on the sex offenders register. As many people fall victim to rape when they’ve had too much to drink I would also like to remind you of our advice on alcohol safety: n Plan transport ahead of a night out.

  • Don’t drink too much.
  • Walk away from any trouble.
  • If you are walking, stay on main roads and avoid shortcuts and unlit areas.
  • Only use a licensed taxi and sit in the back.
  • Crime levels remain low in West Mercia and the force remains committed to thoroughly investigating rapes or sexual assaults.
