National Grid boosts safety

9:10am Saturday 6th September 2008

EFFORTS to make Britain’s homes safer places are proving to be a success thanks to a helping hand from Cub Scouts and utility giant, National Grid.

Cub Scout packs up and down the country have been clamouring to achieve the Cub Scout Home Safety Badge since National Grid recently announced it would be continuing its sponsorship of the badge for a further two years. In the first few months nearly 20,000 activity packs have been requested.

The Home Safety Badge activity pack is fun to do, as all aspects of home safety are covered, including how to deal with fire, preventing accidents and how to make a 999 call. There is even a scratch and sniff card so people get to know what gas smells like.

National Grid’s executive director gas distribution, Mark Fairbairn, said: “National Grid is proud to be asked to continue our sponsorship of the Home Safety Badge. Safety is a key issue for us and helping youngsters become aware of the importance of safety in their home environment is a very good place to start.

“This is an example of our commitment to the power of action showing that everyone, including children, can take action to make the world around them a safer place.

“Last year, 35,000 activity packs were sent out on our behalf, which was really good news, but this year’s call off rate is even faster – it’s really good news.”
