According to popular press reports, the UK Government are currently strongly supporting energy efficiency measures as a clear strategy to reduce carbon emissions and meet the EU target to reduce nationwide co2 emissions by 20% by the year 2020.

In 2009 buildings accounted for about 43% of all the UK’s carbon emissions. Buildings and other developments can also damage the environment, through poor waste management or inefficient use of resources.

In order to cut the carbon emission of UK businesses and meet the 2020 targets, the Government are in the process of implementing environmental policies, including the ‘Energy savings Opportunities Scheme’ (ESOS) which will encourage UK businesses to implement energy efficiency measures to save money and carbon.

ESOS aims to help UK enterprises to “improve profitability through better information on how to save energy”. The scheme will apply to all large enterprises in the UK who employ 250+ people, who will be required to undertake ESOS assessments which will help to identify the most effective ways to reduce their energy bills via energy efficiency measures.

Whilst the scheme is unlikely to be compulsory, it is fully supported by Energy and Climate Change Minister Greg Barker, who believes that “Effective energy efficiency means cutting out waste and increasing profits. These new energy saving assessments will help our largest firms identify where money can be saved by installing energy efficiency measures.”

“The potential benefits of cutting down on energy waste are significant – £56,400 savings per year on the energy bills of the average large business, and £1.9 billion benefits to the UK as a whole.”

So, what should your business do to ensure that they save money through the ESOS scheme? There are a whole host of quick and easy measures which you could install. From low energy lighting, to voltage optimisation and energy demand management measures; businesses can reduce the energy use and save money using a multitude of approaches.
