Upbeat forecasts have suggested that the UK economy is going to have hit a 5 year unemployment low.

This was confirmed on Wednesday, when the official statistics were released.

From January – March 2014, there were 30.43 million people in employment. That’s 722,000 more than last year.  As predicted, the rate of unemployment is the lowest it’s been in 5 years.

Optimistic as these statistics are, recovery in the labour market isn’t as huge you’d initially think.

The decrease in unemployment rates can largely be attributed to the increasing number of people working for themselves.

An article released by the Guardian back in January warned that the country’s economic growth could be threatened by employers who are unable to find the skills they need.

The article stated that employers were unable to find candidates with the right skills to fill more than 1 in 5 candidates. There’s also the ridiculous situation where employers are hiring very skilled staff to perform basic jobs.

This highlights just how important it is for employers to invest in people, and train them up. It’s why apprenticeships and similar schemes exist, after all.

In the meantime, if you’re struggling to find the staff you need, recruitment agencies often have a pool of candidates you may not be able to find independently of them. It’s worth contacting your local recruitment company and seeing who they can find.
