Kidderminster's oldest pub, Ye Olde Severn Stars in Coventry Street, Kidderminster has come up with an innovative way to raise funds for KEMP Hospice.

Robin Copeman - landlord of the pub for the past two years decided, along with his son Matt to rescue 15 former battery hens and one cockeral. The chickens now live happily on a piece of land ranging freely at the bottom of the pub's beer garden.

Matt said "It seemed like such a good idea to give these chickens a second chance, but also to provide free range eggs to our customers"

Customers at the pub are able to sponsor a chicken for a one-off donation of £5.00 which is then donated to KEMP Hospice. When a box of six eggs is full, a customer's name is pulled out of a hat and they receive their eggs.

So far over forty people have sponsored a hen, and receive on average half a dozen free range eggs per month, already raising £200 for KEMP Hospice.

The pub have also installed 'Chick TV' so that instead of watching Big Brother, customers can watch the chickens live from the comfort of the bar.

Robin and Matt have been great supporters of KEMP, and have recently celebrated their second birthday at the pub. In June they held a ghost walk around the town which raised £150 for KEMP Hospice, and late this month Matt will be having a 'sponsored spray tan' in aid of the Hospice.

If you are interested in sponsoring a chicken, why not pop down to Ye Olde Severn Stars and enjoy a drink. The pub also offers a 'bring your own grub' service, they provide the plates and even do the washing up!
