Posted by ChrisM, Kidderminster: I think Kidderminster town centre should keep all of the old (pre-1960) buildings, but most of the 60s and 70s buildings should be replaced or face-lifted as they're simply so ugly and out of place.

Think Crown House, TJ Hughes building, most of the other cheap-looking council buildings, and that sort of rubbish.

The old market building by the leisure centre and ring road needs something doing with it. Even apartments would be better than it is now, but it's a nice building, really.

The station needs a facelift, too. The whole town needs a tidy up, anyway. In fact, if money and time didn't matter, it would be nice if we could strip the whole town back to the 50s and start again, and plan it properly.

Posted by John Humphries, West Australia: In my opinion Kidderminster has nowhere to go. It has lost its old world charm and has given way to contemporary demands, and its character has been lost with the demands of so-called progress.

It's like trying to recut an old diamond - you cannot give it a new face value. I know I was born there in 1925, and in my heart it will remain as it was, and not what it will be.

I was in the Second World War. I not only fought for England, I fought for Kidderminster, my home town.

Posted by riversides, Worcester: I think Kidderminster has nothing for kids. I would like some of the old land used for building an ice rink or a field for motorbikes to be ridden on safely.

By email from Dawn Stevens: I would like to give you my ideas on how to develop the former British Sugar site, bearing in mind all the complaints of youths being on the streets, being bored, nowhere for them to go and causing trouble...

Teenagers for years now have had nowhere to go, there aren't any clubs or community centres around any more where they can just sit and chat and meet up with friends, buy soft drinks, snacks and so on. Those days have long gone, so where do they go?

The problem will not go away so to solve all the problems, not just for teenagers but for young families and so on, the development should be leisure and entertainment, for everyone in Kidderminster, Bewdley, Stourport and the surrounding areas.

This would include an ice skating rink, cinema, large cafe, ten pin bowling and an arcade (no gambling machines).

Having this in the area will get all teenagers meeting there, and if trouble does start there will be security around.

I would not mind my taxes going towards this. I am very sure there are a lot of people out there who would agree with me.

By email from Shane and Mark: We are 10 and nine years old and we would like an ice rink built. Thankyou.

I’m born, bread and live in Kidderminster for the last thirty-one years and have seen the town change allot during that time.

Just looking at all those comments above, I agree with Chris about getting rid of the Crown House building (because it’s in the top ten in the country of being an eyesore). This building alone lets the whole town down along with the TJ Hughes building along side it. Other sore points are the gateway into the town like Station Hill. My granddad showed me pictures of Station Hill when it had trees every twenty yards from the bridge to the ring road but now its all striped away showing run down buildings on route to Kidderminster, lovely.

I think that’s the main problem for Kidderminster, at the moment there are too many 60’s and 70’s buildings still hanging around the place and not enough modern buildings being built. Sure, we still need an ice ring, multiplex cinema, large café and tin pin bowling facilitates because other towns like Telford support these needs for their home residents.

On the positive side, the face of Kidderminster is changing through. There has been a allot of investment over the last eight years like Weavers Wharf which harbours shops, a gym and places to eat. The massive retail park where the old carpet factory used to be then there’s Green Street, which had no life at all, is now packed with a nightclub, pool bars, modern office blocks, DIY store and a small cinema. The upper part of that where all those ugly buildings lie, are also being blown away with the new Morrison store being built.

Towns like Droitwich, Bromsgrove and Redditch would love to have what we have here at Kidderminster. As they say: Endast ska gör det bäst för Kidderminster, townen kopplas samman med townen av Husum, Tyskland.
