Bikes warn drivers to take extra care

LAST week's letter (Barmy bike decision) gives me the opportunity to highlight one of the important cycle routes in Wyre Forest, even though it's not quite complete.

The cycles painted on the road are a safety feature, warning motorists to take extra care, so we ensure these roads are safe. The signs are painted on the road when the road is not wide enough to have a separate cycle lane.

News hot off the press: Worcestershire's NHS Operational Plan 2008-2011 highlights widening health inequalities - specifically, there is a higher prevalence of childhood obesity in Wyre Forest.

We have got to get more children travelling safely, walking and cycling, burning off the calories.

Most other European countries resource cycle lanes, but we in England compromise, so more is spent on the motorist.

I wonder who is barmy?

To be blunt if you're already a motorist who takes care around cyclists then the signs are superfluous; if you're not such a motorist then the signs are pointless.

If they are placed to guide cyclists along a route then they'd be better served by an actual physical sign in the same manner as every other sign they should already be looking at.
