Potholes: Stop blaming others
I CAN understand how Lindsay Turford feels after having her car wheel damaged by a pothole near the end of Wilden Lane (Shuttle/Times & News, April 24) , but quite right for the council NOT to pay her for it.
Why do people expect a hand-out for everything that goes wrong? If I hear another person moaning about potholes, I'll quietly go mad.
It's people's driving habits that are to blame. For years the roads have been subject to the surface breaking up, subsiding, bumps and all sorts of hazards. Just because roads in general have improved since the 1920s doesn't mean that someone is "to blame".
Drivers need to look at their own attitude first. They are in control of the car. If they can't see the road clearly, then they should slow down.
Look at what we've spent on traffic calming measures, speed humps, speed cameras and all manner of expensive solutions.
Millions of pounds have been spent and wasted to try and get our roads safe again. That cash could have bought us supersmooth roads and better driving environments, with enough cash left over to feed a starving country.

So difficult to comment as I agree with the general points. If someone was driving at 60mph in a derestricted road at night in lashing rain and something happened, I'd have no sympathy; likewise someone not paying attention and smacking into something, it's their fault.
The trouble is it's possible to voice such arguments and concerns when you were driving responsibly and their really is someone else to blame.
The important thing to remember is that we pay for these services whether roads or paths, and if as a result of bad service we end up hurt or out of pocket isn't it right to ask for compensation and our money back?
