Farm food to be showcased

THE NFU is set to raise the profile of the Great British farmer at the Food and Drink Expo 2008 in Birmingham.

Buyers from the food service, retail and wholesale markets will be among more than 80,000 visitors expected to attend the trade show at the NEC from Sunday.

The event is the leading UK exhibition for the latest and most innovative food and drink products and services from around the world.

Visitors to the NFU stand will be able to learn more about the organisation, the key role its members play in providing high quality and assured solutions to the food service industry and how it works with Assured Food Standards (AFS) in promoting the Red Tractor logo.

The NFU's vice-president, Paul Temple, said: "It's important we raise the profile of British farmers who produce food envied the world over for its quality and standards of animal welfare.

"We work extremely closely with the food industry to encourage them to buy British food where possible.

"The Food and Drink Expo is all about promoting quality products and the NFU stand will focus on telling visitors how they can buy locally produced, seasonal British Red Tractor assured food."

On the NFU stand there will be a competition to win a prime meats hamper and a chance to sample the NFU centenary beer, Farmers Harvest, the first alcoholic beverage to carry the Red Tractor assurance mark.

The centenary ale has been brewed by Warwickshire-based Purity Brewing Company and is on sale at more than 230 Tesco stores around the country, as well as through the Beer Club of Britain.

Other features at this year's Food and Drink Expo include Chefs Live, where visitors can not only watch competitors and top chefs in action but also taste the delights as they are cooked.

Food and Drink Expo 2008 is being held from Sunday until Wednesday in halls 6 and 20 at the NEC in Birmingham. The NFU will be at stand M219.

The Red Tractor is an initiative that gives full assurance to consumers about production standards and total traceability back to the farm. For more information, visit http://www.nfuonline.com/x6342.xml.
