WORK is due to start on improvements to Bridge Street in Stourport at the end of this month.

The improvements will include new lampposts, the block paving of most of the pavement and new bins and direction signs. The scheme also includes new and refurbished street nameplates, a gateway feature and a public art project.

Wyre Forest District Council teamed up with Worcestershire County Council and Stourport Forward Market Towns Initiative, funded by Advantage West Midlands, to prepare the plans. In spring, the partners asked the public for views on the ideas for the area.

Councillor Stephen Clee, the district council's cabinet member for regeneration and planning, said: "There was a very positive response to public consultation, with widespread recognition of the need to improve this part of the town.

"The road and pavements are in need of repair and by working with our partners we are also taking the opportunity to make environmental improvements too."

He added: "The scheme is part of a long-term programme to inject new life into the area. It will deliver real improvements for the benefit of local residents and businesses and the many visitors.

"Every effort will be made to minimise any disturbance during the works."

Derek Fradgley, chairman of Stourport Forward, said: "We heard concerns about the disruption to trade caused by the works to the bridge in Stourport and this will now extend for the works in Bridge Street but we understand the authorities are undertaking essential repairs.

"These improvements will enable Stourport to emerge stronger. It is great to see Bridge Street getting some much needed attention and I look forward to the end result, which will be good for the image and future prosperity of our town."

The improvement works are due to last for six weeks.
