SEVERAL elderly people were treated for the effects of smoke following a fire at a sheltered housing complex in Wolverley in the early hours of this morning.

Kidderminster firefighters were called to Knight Court, in Sebright Road, at 1.30am to tackle a blaze in a house owned by a couple in their late 70s.

Watch manager Mick Rowlands said: "The fire was caused by a plain and simple malfunction in a tall fridge/freezer in the kitchen.

"The kitchen was destroyed and the couple won't be able to return there for quite some time.

"Ambulance crews treated several elderly people at the scene for the effects of smoke."
