CONSERVATIVE-controlled Worcestershire County Council has elected councillor Alwyn Davies to take over the reins of chairman for the year 2008/09.

The Hallow conservative succeeds fellow Tory member, John Smith, who represents Evesham North West. Councillor John Cairns, whose ward covers Worcester St Peter, is the new vice-chairman.

Mr Davies, a retired chartered surveyor, is a keen fan of Worcester Warriors rugby team and Worcestershire County Cricket Club.

"I am looking forward to visiting all corners of the county and working together with all councillors to promote the many great things Worcestershire has to offer," he said.
