DISTRICT council Leader John Campion has a very strange view of what the people of Wyre Forest would consider important. (Shuttle, February 27).

He justifies rejecting the Independent Remuneration Panel’s recommendations on reducing councillors’ allowances by saying that “it has no credibility” without justifying this statement and that residents would not agree with him receiving a small increase.

Councillor Campion carefully chooses to ignore the fact that it is proposed that all other councillor allowances would be reduced to bring them more in line with neighbouring councils in Worcestershire.

The average Wyre Forest allowance is the highest in Worcestershire and nearly £900 more than in Bromsgrove. No wonder he wants to withdraw from using the IRP in the future as he does not like their answers.

I wrote to The Shuttle recently regarding the dramatic cuts Wolverhampton councillors were making to their allowances, in line with the Independent Remuneration Panel’s findings and that is in a unitary city council with much greater duties and responsibilities but Councillor Campion is as always selective in what he quotes as justification.

Everyone else is suffering from the severe austerity cuts imposed by his government so why shouldn’t councillors?
