TWO articles in The Shuttle of March 6 illustrate the strange attitude of Wyre Forest District Council to money and the provision of sports facilities for the people of Kidderminster, Bewdley and Stourport.

Page 2 covered the proposal to build a new leisure centre on the old British Sugar site in Kidderminster whilst closing the leisure centres at The Glades and in Bewdley and Stourport.

That’s one facility to replace the three currently serving the three towns and 98,000 people, most of whom will not be able to walk there. Does this make sense?

The cost of this new facility is £10 million.

Relate this to the article on Page 6 of the same edition which said that the council is short of money and will therefore have to increase taxes whilst cutting spending.

How can you be short of money if you can afford £10 million on an ego trip? Borrowing costs money.

Don’t use the argument that the money is in different pots – capital and revenue – and that money has to be saved on the maintenance of older buildings.

All buildings have to be maintained, otherwise they fall into disrepair.

Obviously maintenance of one building will cost less than looking after three. On this basis why not get rid of all buildings?

The mind boggles!
