TESCO Express is not needed or wanted in Areley Kings. The reasons are:

  • On-road parking: This reduces part of Areley Common to single track and traffic needs to manoeuvre around these parked cars.
  • 7.5 tonne weight restriction: Tesco lorries are 18 tons, delivering three times daily and accessing the site from the Stourport direction is not possible. Deliveries would take an alternative route through unsuitable residential roads. Whilst unloading, the lorry will block parked cars or reduce available spaces.
  • Shoppers will park on Areley Common. Human behaviour would lead to parking on double yellow lines or partially on the pavement.
  • There are seven buses per hour using Areley Common.
  • It is a school route.
  • Noise and light pollution and diesel emissions.
  • Areley Kings is a thriving community but cannot sustain two direct competitors only 50 yards apart. The newsagent could not compete in this market.
  • Loss of jobs for four delivery boys and the local delivery, and 42 full/part-time jobs at Londis. Tesco would employ only 20 people.
  • Loss of livelihood for newsagents and Londis proprietor.
  • Loss of the post office.
  • Londis provides business to 16 local suppliers, supplies home-cooked hot meals to the community and supports local charities.
