IT WAS very good to read about Kidderminster churches coming together to remember the start of the First World War, as it is vitally important that we never forget the victims of that appalling conflict .
What a pity though, that St Mary’s Church was planning to release balloons as part of the commemorations.
The RSPCA and many other environmental, farming and animal protection organisations are opposed to such releases because of the potentially harmful effect of the balloons on animals and the environment.
And to quote from Worcestershire County Council’s policy on the subject: “Balloons are mistaken for food by many species of wildlife. Once balloons have been eaten they can block digestive systems and cause animals to starve. The string on balloons can also entangle and trap animals.”
The balloons may have been carrying “messages of peace”, but there would not be much peace, I fear, for any animal that might happen to swallow one!
