In the Shuttle dated June 18 you reported on a man convicted of stealing from Tesco.

His defending solicitor stated in court that prior to coming here nine months ago, he’d studied for a law degree in Romania for two years and hoped to return to complete his studies.

Apart from the fact that, in view of his studies, he should be more aware than most that thieving is against the law, I fail to see that this is in any way a mitigating circumstance.

Or should we conclude that members of the legal profession are entitled to receive a more lenient sentence for their crimes.
