I WAS amazed to read last week’s letter regarding the Apple Pye Club which was founded in 1765.
Unfortunately I can’t throw any light on its history, but here in Kidderminster there is an Apple Pie Fund that donates to charities and individuals with a specific need. It began two years ago when my friend was asked by her vicar to help raise money for a toilet for the disabled. He gave the congregation £10 each and the idea was to make it grow – as in the parable of the talents.
She was busy and I was recently retired so I offered to make apple pies (it was a particularly good year for Bramleys) and she was to sell the pies to her friends and neighbours. We gave £150 to the church and the pies were still very much in demand so we decided to continue the ‘business’ and donate to charities that were significant personally, or to people who would benefit from a small monetary gift. We opened a bank account named ‘The Apple Pie Fund’ and gave away £1,000 in our first year.
We have done the same again this year but this will increase as we are holding a garden party this Wednesday to bring in some extra money for Cancer Research, as my friend and I have both seen the effects of cancer close at hand. What a coincidence that a similar group was working in this same town 200 years ago!
