Climate of change suits governments

CLIMATE change appears to be the new religion, and Alan Cunningham (Letters, December 25) sounds like a fire and brimstone preacher with his recklessly unproven warnings of doom, gloom and eternal damnation.

He blames mankind for this year’s floods and non-summer, yet a couple of years ago his fellow eco-warriors blamed us for the droughts! Heads they win, tails we sceptics lose.

In fact, the Severn has been flooding for hundreds of years and we sceptics can point to eras of the past which were much hotter. Greenland was so named because of its lush vegetation, and the Romans grew grapes in Scotland.

Then there were the times when it was much colder, even when our industries were much dirtier, insulation almost non-existent and our energy use more wasteful.

The Severn froze sufficiently for cars to drive on it and the saltwater Mersey and Thames could be crossed on foot.

Of course, it makes sense for us to conserve energy and our resources, but there is nothing that we can do, or not do, either individually or nationally in these tiny British islands which would affect the climate for the rest of the world.

The climate of planet Earth (as we have to call in nowadays) is controlled by the sun.

About 10 years ago it was reported that there had been an increase in solar flares on the surface of the sun which would bring warmer weather for several years.

Governments must know this, but it suits them to keep us in a state of fear, and as an excuse to increase taxes.

They don’t even spend this extra money on ‘green’ issues, but on pointless wars which hypocritically would only aggravate climate problems.
